The Will of John Collett (Ref. 1E8) of Broadwell

was made on 22nd October 1597

 

 

 

In the name of God Amen, the twenty-second of October in the year of our Lord God one thousand five hundred ninety seven, I John Collett of Broadwell in the county of Gloucester husbandman being sick in body yet of good and perfect remembrance thanks be unto Almighty God for the same do ordain and make this my last Will and Testament in manner and form

 

Following first and principally, I bequeath my soul unto Almighty God my only redeemer and saviour and my body to the earth from whence it was taken there to rest unto the universal day of judgement at what time I hope to rise again both body and soul unto life everlasting through Jesus Christ my only saviour and redeemer

 

Item I give towards the reparations of the church of Broadwell 20 pence

 

Item I give unto the poor of the town of Broadwell a strike of corn to be distributed at the discretion of my executor

 

Item I give unto my son William Collett 3 pence

 

Item I give unto Robert my son 2 strikes of corn

 

Item I give unto Henry Collett the elder my son 2 strikes of corn and to his two children Thomas and John a half of a guinea unto between them

 

Item I give unto my daughter Elizabeth Collins 2 strikes of corn and to her children 4 pence apiece

 

Item I give unto Henry my son the younger my great brass pan and my iron bedstead in the nether chamber

 

Item I give unto Anthony my son my second best brass pan and my iron bedstead in the upper chamber to bed linen unto them at the decease of my wife

 

Item the rest of all my goods my debts and legacies being discharged and all other charges rising by means of my decease being divided into two equal parts by my executors I will that the one part shall remain unto my two sons before named Henry and Anthony to be equally divided between them and to be paid by my neighbour and then the same to remain in the hands of my wife until they have come to twenty-one years of age and the other part I give unto Katherine my wife whom I make my whole executrix to see my debts and legacies paid and my body hence to be brought to the earth as my trust is in her and before my neighbour William Wright of Broadwell and John Collett of Naunton to be witnesses to this my last Will and Testament

The sons of John Collett and Marion Jakes named in the Will were:

William Collett (Ref. 1F14), Robert Collett (Ref. 1F17), Henry Collett (Ref. 1F18)

together with the grandsons Thomas Collett (Ref. 1G5) and John Collett (Ref. 1G6)

plus their daughter Elizabeth Collins nee Collett (Ref. 1F15)

 

The sons of John Collett and Katherine Sanders named in the Will were:

Henry Collett (Ref. 1F19) and Anthony Collett (Ref. 1F22)

 

The witness John Collett (1F9) of Naunton (1548-1605)

was the son of John’s older brother Henry Collett (1E3)
